How to Prep for a Spray Tan (So It Looks Flawless, Not Patchy!)

A bad spray tan isn’t your artist’s fault—it’s your prep! If you’ve ever had a streaky, uneven, or patchy tan, chances are, something in your routine set you up for failure. But don’t worry! With the right preparation, your tan will apply flawlessly, last longer, and fade evenly—no weird blotches or orange spots.

Whether you're getting bronzed for a special event or just want to maintain that sun-kissed glow year-round, follow these expert-approved steps for the best results.

1. Exfoliate 24 Hours Before Your Appointment

A smooth, even surface is key to a perfect tan. Dead skin buildup can cause patchiness, so gently exfoliating at least 24 hours before your spray tan allows your skin time to recover. Avoid using scrubs with oils, as they can create a barrier on your skin.

Best product for exfoliating: Bora Bora Body Polish – This tropical-infused body polish uses pumice and Monoi de Tahiti to gently exfoliate while keeping your skin hydrated for a radiant finish.

Pro Tip: Focus on rough areas like elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists, where the tan tends to cling more.

2. Shave or Wax 24 Hours Before

If you plan to shave or wax, do it at least 24 hours before your appointment to avoid irritation or open pores that could absorb too much tanning solution.

Pro Tip: If shaving after your tan, use a fresh razor and skip shaving cream (opt for conditioner instead) to avoid stripping the color.

3. Avoid Lotions, Oils & Perfumes the Day of Your Tan

Your skin should be completely clean and dry on the day of your appointment—no lotions, oils, deodorants, or perfumes. These can create a barrier that prevents the tanning solution from absorbing evenly and developing properly.

4. Wear Dark, Loose-Fitting Clothing

After your spray tan, opt for dark, loose clothing to prevent lines or streaks. Avoid leggings, tight bras, and anything that could rub against your fresh tan.

Pro Tip: Wear flip-flops instead of closed-toe shoes to avoid smudging your tan on your feet! Or nothing at all since I am homing to you!

5. Hydrate & Moisturize After Your Tan

Keeping your skin hydrated is the key to making your tan last longer and fade evenly. Moisturize daily after your first shower with a hydrating, oil-free lotion.

Best post-tan moisturizer: Moorea Moisturizer – A lightweight, non-greasy blend of Tiare Flower, Coconut, and Shea Butter to keep your skin feeling soft, smooth, and hydrated without affecting your tan.

6. Use the Right Products to Extend Your Tan

Your aftercare routine is just as important as your prep. Using harsh body washes, bar soaps, or exfoliating products will cause your tan to fade unevenly. Stick to gentle, sulfate-free cleansers and hydrating formulas.

Best body wash to protect your tan: Bikini Island Body Wash – Sulfate-free formula enriched with Monoi de Tahiti and Green Tea to cleanse without stripping your tan.

Keep your glow longer: Tahitian Tan Mist – A lightweight self-tanner perfect for touch-ups between sessions.

7. Stay Dry for at Least 6-8 Hours

Avoid sweating, showering, or coming into contact with water for at least 6-8 hours after your tan to allow the solution to fully develop. If possible, wait until the next morning to rinse off your tan for deeper color. And don’t forget that I have the express formula where you can rinse in 2 hrs!

Pro Tip: If it’s raining, bring an umbrella and wear long sleeves and pants to avoid water spots!
